Bloggers Block and the X-Fi

Firstly let me apologise for not updating this page in so long. It was a mixture of the not uncommon condition, Bloggers Block, combined with the fact that I was away on holidays. On that point may I say that Sicily is a wonderful country but I wish someone had told me that Taormina (where we stayed) is totally unsuitable for babies. None of the restaurants have high chairs and it is full of bloody steps. And now, for something completely different.

I have what can be best described as a limited CD collection. Recently however it was further abridged as the baby discovered that compact discs make wonderful miniature sledges for sliding around on wooden floors. I have now learned that the CD can only withstand a certain number of scratches before the player starts skipping like it’s vinyl predecessors. For this reason I decided to upload them onto the PC where hopefully my miniscule music collection will be safe from his destructive little hands.

So what use is music sitting on your Hard Drive? Well thanks to a wonderful new gadget from Creative Labs the solution is simple. The X-Fi (Xtreme Fidelity) allows you to connect a transmitter (X-Mod) via a USB port to your PC. This beams your music within a 30m range and allows up to four receivers be attached to other music equipment i.e. stereo, home cinema, etc. You can use iTunes, Media Player, Real Player or any other software with the system.

One of my mantras is “nothing is ever easy” but for once a gadget that just worked first go, straight out of the box. No installation CD’s, no searching for new devices, no computer rebooting or freezing…just crystal clear music. Now all I have to do is acquire something to listen to!
