Summer has arrived at last!

Well praise the Lord the rain has finally stopped. For the past week there has barely been any precipitation at all. The weather forecasters started promising us this “settled spell” last weekend (as it lashed) but as always it was treated with a high degree of suspicion. I was half thinking that they were just saying it to try and relieve the mass depression which has gripped the country for the past three months. From about Tuesday things started to improve, to the extent that I didn’t even arm myself with the now mandatory umbrella tucked under the pit on the journey to work. It was Wednesday when I heard it for the first time this year on the train, “God the heat is terrible”. Give me a break!

We decided to sit outside to have dinner on Friday night. It was a balmy 21oC. The BBQ was sparked up and the M&B chair covers were dusted off for their inaugural use (three months after buying them). Unfortunately however it is so late in the year for this “summer” to arrive it is getting dark now around half eight. Not letting a minor matter like that perturb us we lit a few citronella candles (optimistically purchased in the end of season sales last autumn) to keep the midges away. The “plough” was directly overhead, the fillets were perfectly medium and the Rioja was exceptional. This is a great country the couple of days a year that the sun shines!
