1847 - Probably in the midst of the Great Famine

I have felt for the last couple of years that the Carlsberg advertising Department should have done some basic research before plastering every second billboard and news hoarding in the country, with the fact that their tipple has been “brewed to perfection since 1847”. Now you wouldn’t even have to read the entire of Joseph O’Connor’s “Star of the Sea” to realise that 1847 was not what one would describe as a “good year” in Ireland. While over a million people starved to death and another million attempted to emigrate the Danes were busy perfecting their beer brewing. Probably 'not' the most sensitive advertising campaign in the world . I tried to ring the Carlsberg complaints department, but no one answered!

Whatever about what those Danes were up to, I was even more shocked to discover that “Elverys Sports” was founded in, you guessed it, 1847! Am I missing something here? Who the hell was buying sports equipment during the great famine (answers on a postcard please)? You wouldn't imagine that there was a huge market for the latest Nike Croquet set during the blackest years this country has ever witnessed. In this day and age however, with the benefit of hindsight, if I owned Elverys I would fudge the incorporation date to maybe some time in the late 1850’s. Better times when once again the Brazen Head was serving creamy Baked Potatoes washed down with cold pints of Carlsberg.
