Summer Solstice – Irish Style

It may be hard to believe, but the days are getting shorter from now on in. On that cheery note I shall now put into the record a synopsis of the 2007 Summer Solstice as it occurred in Ireland (well Dublin anyway).

The annual summer solstice occurred on Thursday last. For most of the world this signifies the longest day of the year, however here on the Emerald Isle it marks the wettest. The rain poured from first thing in the morning until the sun gave up even trying to make an appearance and trundled on to some country where it is more appreciated. On the way home from work the roads had become mere tributaries of the Liffey. The Dart was hot, humid and jammed. Condensation oozed from the walls as the wet bodies attempted to repel each other.

I blame the Greens. Ever since they jumped into bed with FF it has rained continuously. Back in April we were basking in sunshine and everyone was "concerned" at the unseasonably warm weather. The undercurrent however was more related to how this Climate Change business would have us growing olives in our back gardens while listening to the crickets on the deck and quaffing our home grown Chardonnay. However, no sooner did the Greens seize the levers of power than it has rained for 40 days and 40 nights. Now granted we have not had the Biblical style rain that our neighbours across the water have been experiencing, but we have the typical Irish version; constant misery. Anyway I must dash; I have an Ark to build!
